- If HST had no "salient value" then how come USR still had two
- separate models? We're not talking about "way back when the Couriers
- were big enough to use as backboards" nor are we talking about the
- "daughterboard" Couriers. Even with the single board Courier models they
- disntinguished the "V.Everything" from the "Dual Standard" up until the
- 11/1/95 flash, in features and in _price_.
-
- As for having to "lock" the host (answering) modem into cellular
- mode and "rendering it useless for anything else", that's complete
- bullshit. If you configure the answering modem with &F1 it will answer
- for V.34/V.FC/V.32terbo,bis, etc.. and it will also do cellular mode if a
- modem calls in using HST Cellular.
-
- : USR realized that as the various technological advances have come along

- : is an issue, then go back to the 07/05/95 code, lock your modem in HST
- : cellular mode and kwitcherbellyachin.

- Ok, so where's the MNP 10 that replaced Cellular mode? Mine are
- on the 1/23/96 firmware and they're not doing MNP-10. Who are you to
- tell me when I can and can't complain about problems with a product I've
- bought?
-
- : As for the "Dual Standard" moniker, this fell by the wayside along with
- : HST Cellular. USR's flagship modem is today called the "V.Everything"
- : and HST modulation is included at no additional charge. USR didn't
- : downgrade the "Dual" rather they upgraded the V34 model and reduced
- : the price. I paid over $700 for my first Courier/Dual from a
- : mailorder/discount outfit back in 1989. How much is *that* modem worth
- : today? $50 maybe?
- :
-
- Look, we're not talking about "back in 89", this is a single board
- Courier "Dual Standard". Not the vintage "See my Courier, it's so big I
- can literally surf on it in the ocean, not just on the net" model. It
- was purchased only a few months ago.
-
-
- : USR took nothing away from you.... if you need HST Cellular, you're not
- : going to be able to use *any* of the V34 toys because you're going to
- : have to leave your modem locked in HST Cellular mode in order to make
- : HST Cellular work, ergo you only need the 7/5/95 firmware.
- :
-
- Again, bullshit. Answering modems are able to us ANY of the
- protocols, they're not "locked in" like you keep claiming. I can type
- 'ATZ', have the modem answer to an HST Cellular, then without resetting
- any settings afterwards have it pick up again and negotiate a V.whatever
- connect.
-
- One of my main gripes here is that they just took features out
- that were documented to be there. There was NO mention of this in any of
- the README's, WHATSNEW's, etc.. in the SDL's. They just assumed that no
- one used this and it wouldn't be missed. Let's use an analogy here: You
- take your car to the dealership for service and they automatically assume
- that you don't use your air conditioning. So, they proceed to remove it
- without mentioning it to you. The summer rolls around, you try to use
- your A/C but it's not there, oops! It wouldn't bother you that they
- removed a documented feature on the sales invoice of your car?
